Today I thought I’d look at YouTube’s highest watched videos today and pick one to talk about. So under one of the categories I found a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcy-KN_rKHM&feature=topvideos) about an extreme 4×4 in action! And it led me to search monster trucks, which led me to this awesome gravedigger video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LIifYLOcz0), which in turn led me to remember the amazing Monster Jam ads that often graced the television. I hope you’ve witnessed them, they are so choice. Heres the best one I found (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOYN4ctryIE&feature=related). I mean the amount of epic-ness alone makes me want to get off the couch and buy tickets. And why wouldn’t I? I mean, Kids seats are just 5 bucks!!! For years now, It’s always been the same announcer and he spits the same garbage over and over. This ad campaign hasn’t changed for years now and I still have trouble understanding why. Yes I think the commercials are ridiculously funny, but what about the people who see them and then actually go to these Monster Jam events. Along with NASCAR this is a part of America I still don’t fully grasp and I’m not sure I ever will. I remember once when I was 10 or so being at a state or county fair that had an event similar to Monster Jam. It was something like mud racing where these supped up cars and trucks would go as far as they could while slipping and sliding though lakes of mud, all the while making so much noise I couldn’t even hear myself think. Being a 20-year-old college idiot I now think, “I would totally go if I was like hammered” (insert total-bro frat voice). And I probably would go, and I actually may even have a kick ass time. Though I may never understand it, it’s a part of American culture that I think if I embrace, I could enjoy myself a little bit. I had just written a speech for another one of my classes that had the moral of, always try new things and have new experiences (I know it’s not the most complex and deep, but hey its written in a foreign language so cut me some slack). No matter how cliche’ it sounds it will always hold true, New experiences challenge you in ways you may never have been challenged before. I think it of the utmost importance to get out of your little box and explore the world out there. If you always stay in your comfort zone, you can never improve on who you are. A Japanese proverb goes, 失敗は成功のもと　or, “failure is the basis for success”. Though I am in most ways a perfectionist, I think it is important to not only fail but learn from those mistakes. Curiosity may have killed the cat, but we are way smarter. So go out there and take some risks. In the end, you’ll be more upset if you didn’t.

I thought it important to take the time to share with you one of the most amazing things I have witnessed in recent memory. I am of course referring to Ong Bak, a ridiculously awesome martial arts film starring Tony Ja as lead ass kicker. Now as I’ve grown over the years as a movie watched my tastes have undoubtedly changed. I now prefer movies that make me think or really feel to those of a more superficial nature. More often than not, I find myself disinterested in the latest Transformers epic or the newest film in the Transporter series; yet, I don’t want to come off as a snobby film enthusiast because I still do find myself at the movie theater watching many of those exact types of movies with my friends. They really are entertaining when I check my brain at the door. But I digress. I came here to talk about Ong Bak so I should probably layout the framework of how I came across this film.

On a very hung over saturday afternoon, the roommates and I decided to go downstairs to the lounge hall in our apartment complex (It has a gigantic plasma projector screen tv with all the hd channels and satellite tv; I really have no idea why we hadn’t made our way in there at an earlier date because it blows away our shitty little non-hd 32 incher). We were flipping through its channels and came across a hd movie channel that was just playing the most recent movie trailers over the next hour. Though I usually don’t mean it literally, I often say that previews are my favorite part of going to the movies so we were hooked immediately. And after a few boring trailers came the diamond in the rough; it was a preview for Ong Bak 2 which was set to hit theaters in a few weeks and was going to be shown in an early release on this exact channel. It really is hard to put into words the awesomeness of this trailer, but just picture someone running with a herd of stampeding elephants and jumping from one to another and you’ll have an idea of what I’m getting at. We decided then and there that we would watch that early screening of Ong Bak 2 but thought it wrong of us to do this without first witnessing Ong Bak, the original. By the righteous hand of God, it was on Netflix’s “watch instantly” list. So the 4 of us squeezed onto one couch to witness what I believe is called film magic. What ensued was an hour and a half of Tony Jaa chasing some bad guys for his village’s stolen diety statue while throwing flying knees and elbows at anyone who crossed his path. The story was garbage, I mean pure retarded trash; and yet somehow, when mixed with amazing martial arts skills and stunts, it was the absolutely terrific. Now these aren’t your run of the mill Jackie Chan stunts- the guy did a flying spin kick with his legs engulfed in flames! I personally recommend both the first and second film in this series. They are highly entertaining. Just make sure you put your brain on off mode before viewing or you might not be able to enjoy it to the fullest.

Have you ever seen or listened to someone and thought “Man, someone really needs to punch you in the face”? Maybe its some idiot blabbering on their cell phone in the quiet area of the library, or some bonehead that sits in the front of one of your lectures and asks the dumbest questions about once every 10 minutes or so. Or a politician ranting on the TV, or some musical artist who is ruining music as we know and love it. Now I don’t consider myself a violent person nor a hateful one, but C’mon, if you saw me punch one of these people you just cant stand, are you saying you wouldn’t celebrate just a little on the inside? Let me clarify this further, it’s not like I’m going to jump them with 5 of my gang buddies, kick them til a couple ribs crack, and steal their money; It’s just one quick sock to the face and that’s it. Maybe it’ll knock some sense into them but if not, at least I’ll feel somewhat at peace.

Now a couple roommates and I were on this exact subject when we asked, “If you could punch one musical artist, who would it be?” We started spit-balling and names like Nickleback, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, All Time Low, and Owl City came up but those just weren’t satisfying enough for me to possibly face criminal charges for this punch. I know it’s not very creative, but I finally chose Kanye West as my Victim. I don’t personally have the strongest of desires to punch him but I know that he needs to get punched more than any other musician today. To at least attempt to sound unbiased, I think you all should know that I personally own all 4 of his full length albums and even paid real US dollars for 2 of them. I listen to a lot of his songs on a regular basis and consider myself a fan of almost all types of music- except country. So it goes to show that it’s not necessarily his music that gives me the urge to throw haymakers his way, but instead his public behavior. Most recently, it was his actions at the VMA’s where he got on stage, stole the microphone from Taylor Swift, and began to tell the audience how she really wasn’t the one who should have one the award. WHAT?!?! If I had heard this story or something similar and did not know that it was Kanye West, I would have been much more surprised. Who in their right mind would do such a thing? And this isn’t the only time something like this has happened. At an award show in the past he publicly pouted and whined about how he did not win certain awards he was nominated for. Somehow these things have transferred into how I view his music and I’ve grown to dislike music I had listened to all the time less than a year ago. So I figured the only way to fix this problem is to plant a big one across his face. I’m having trouble deciding what I’d like better though, a couple teeth knocked out or a big black eye. Maybe I’ll throw in an extra punch just for good measure.

As we study video games and virtual worlds in class, I’ve begun to ponder what my own creation of a virtual world would look like. If I had complete control over the creation of this world, how would it go? Where would I begin? What things would be like our world today? What would be different? Today we have virtual worlds ranging from the everyday mundane SecondLife to the fantasy lands of World of Warcraft. And while my brother has been into the MMORPG’s for quite some time, it never quite caught on with me. I’m not sure what exactly drove me away from them but I have mostly always been disinterested. The reason I say this is because I am totally a nerd at heart. I’ve been playing video games day in and day out for years now and definitely have a broad taste in games. I’ve played most of the Zelda and Final Fantasy series, bought the new version of EA’s NHL every year, and fought through the war campaigns of the multiple Call of Duty games. So why is it that these MMOs aren’t any fun to me? The seem to have the potential for wasting countless hours but I can never get into them.

So from my video game experience and knowledge, I’ll share with you what my MMORPG would be. First things first, super powers are a must. What fun would this role-playing game be if I can’t fly or possibly blow shit up with my mind? With a wide variety of powers as a basis of the game, every character would be “born” or created with one and only of these special powers. I also have a strong fascination with being a pirate so these characters will live in a world of islands with vast oceans. Now this is where my game really starts to take off. All of these MMO’s have rigid rule systems and GM’s, or game masters, running about keeping things in order and this is a problem. I want chaos. No quests to the mines of Moria, missions at Helm’s deep, or gold bonuses for a job well done- not to say that there isn’t gold in my game, I mean, we’re pirates. The game will be progress as you gain more crew mates, build more ships, and plunder more coastal towns, all the while drinking rum by the barrel. Like any MMO game there isn’t really a final end-all-be-all battle with some monster, but I’m sure I’ll think of something by the time the next expansion hits the shelves.

For this weeks blog I thought I’d try and shuffle my music to jog my memory. I was originally turned on to a wide variety of music by my mom at a very young age. She had amassed a very large CD collection over the years and was always playing this or that around the house. This grew into today what is sort of an obsession of mine. I love finding new sounds or artists that elicit strong emotions whatever those emotions may be. I think music has this amazing power that can’t always be expressed in other forms of communication.

While shuffling through my iTunes library I realized I have a lot more jargon or really neglected music than I had anticipated but I finally came across a song I thought I could talk about. The song is titled “Stadium Love” by: Metric. It’s an upbeat, fast paced, in your face sort of sound that really wakes me up. I think I even have it on my workout playlist. Anyways, I guess I don’t feel anything really deep when I listen to this track but then again thats not what a song is always necessarily meant to do. Like a shot of espresso this is a healthy dose of pick-me-up that actually mostly reminds me of a friday night of drinking, since it frequents our weekend playlists. This is just one of the millions of reasons why I love music. It can give me the same sensation a morning cup of coffee can without near as much effort. I don’t have to brew anything or shell out a few dollars to listen to this song. All thats needed is to throw on the headphones and crank up the volume. Next time you’re at Starbucks ask them for a shot of “Stadium Love”, I doubt they have any in stock.

I couldn’t really find anything of interest to write about this week so I thought I’d throw the everyday average routine I go through day in and day out onto paper.

Its 7:30 and I’m woken not by my alarm but by the beeping of a JLG lift outside my window. Every time the god damn thing moves it lights up my ears with its obnoxiously loud beep. Yes closing the window might help but at night it still feels too hot in my tiny apartment bedroom. I fade in and out of sleep for the next hour until my actual alarm goes off at 8:33. It’s purposefully placed on my desk 15 ft away so I am forced to get out of bed and turn it off. Class isn’t until 9:55 so I’ve created a second alarm at 9:17 so I can climb back into bed for a while if I so choose ( this seems to be about everyday lately). So I finally get up at 9:17, shove on some clothes, pack the bag, and head to class. Breakfast is definitely optional since I’m most likely about to just go zone out in lecture for an hour unless I have a test. I hook up the iPod as I head towards the elevator. This is the start of another droning day and a good meal doesn’t make it bearable but instead a good tune. Something loud and upbeat that I can keep pace with as I hustle to class. I’m finally starting to wake up. It’s cold but at least the sun is out. I finally sit down in the large lecture hall by a few acquaintances and we shoot the shit. Nothing really important to talk about at 9:55. Class goes by unusually fast for once as I’m already beginning to pack up my things to leave and head home. I get home and either realize I still have more homework undone for my 1:20 class or actually have planned homework to do that I had delayed until the last minute. If this isn’t the case, this is the time period where I’d go and work out. You can see as to why I’d leave my homework for this time period as Working out isn’t a high priority on my list of things to do. So I get that done as I watch what little interesting shows there are on at that hour and also finally have a bite to eat. Usually something left over from yesterday or the day before. Nevertheless, it will tide me over until dinner. Time for class again. I hustle there as I continue to scour my iPod for music to fit my mood. I’m in and out of there in 50 and head back home once again. At this point in the day I regroup my brain and plan out the evening. Of course that isn’t until I hit up my favorite viral video site for the daily updates. It’s a refreshing and definitely needed midday break. After that I pack up for my final class of the day. This is always an extended class period that doesn’t get over until after 5, and as the year grows longer the days become shorter. I leave the building to find dusk has set in and night is creeping up way too fast; yet for me, the day is barely halfway over. So with the little time I have going from the building to my apartment I put on something relaxing on my iPod and reflect. Not on what school work is due tomorrow or what test I have coming up next, but anything and everything not related to school. It’s the one point in the day where I can really thing and really be alone. It’s nice and comforting but very short-lived. I’m back home and need to find something to make for dinner. I scrounge up something with my mediocre cooking skills and head to the library. 4 hours here should do the trick. After I get more than my fill of homework I head home to unwind for maybe a half an hour and then attempt to hit the sheets. Usually by 1 I’m good and in bed, trying desperately not to think about tomorrow and how it’s just going to be the same cycle over again. Oh well, I guess things could be worse.

While browsing through Yahoo’s home page I cam across todays most popular searches and noticed the search “DJ Hero” towards the top. It got me to thinking about a lot of different things. First off, DJ Hero is a game for the latest gaming systems that follows in the footsteps of guitar hero. I don’t know precisely but my guess is that the player is set in a packed club and made to scratch the freshest rap beats as if they were a real DJ. So my first thought was trying to figure out which instrument would be next in line for the gaming industry. Trumpet Hero? Flute Hero? I find it somewhat absurd that these musical instruments can be dumbed down to just a few buttons and switches. I watch my brother who plays guitar hero religiously and notice how skilled he is at it. He even talks about it as if he is playing some sort of real instrument. I am always very quick to correct him that it is nothing more than a piece of plastic with some electric wires running through it. I feel compelled to tell him this every time I see him playing because I in fact do play the guitar. Not well, but I have definitely put in enough hours to consider myself having some knowledge of the instrument. And you know what? It’s hard as hell. Teaching myself chord after chord while he only has to push down three color coded buttons at the same time to make something sounding like my chord. But I guess it isn’t too bad. I mean people aren’t paying good money to see guitar hero in concert, or at least not yet. Real music is still supreme.

Today while surfing the web, I came across an article on Yahoo about Shakira. The thumbnail was headed as: “How Shakira Fooled a College Class” so I put the ideas of Columbian hotness and me being a college student together and immediately began playing out elaborate fantasies. Yet after coming to the realization that none of those would ever come true, I thought I might as well read the article. Apparently Shakira went undercover at UCLA to take a history course last summer. She used a fake name, wore a baseball cap, and hid beneath a large backpack. Her professor was even quoted as having no idea the latin pop star was in his class. After reading this far into the article I changed my mind about my aforementioned fantasies. I applied to UCLA last year and still wish to go out to California. Therefore, I definitely would have been in that class, I most certainly would have sat next to her, and by fate we would have ended up together happily ever after yada yada yada. After that day dream played out, I actually got to thinking: why is this such a big deal? why did she have to hide her real identity? I tried to step into her shoes and realized how much I would hate to have to deal with such problems. Think about it, if she had used her real name, went to class in her normal get up (which I like to assume is very similar to her outfits in her music videos) , and not attempted in any way to hide her enrollment in the course, the media and paparazzi would have had a feeding frenzy. She probably would have had a difficult time focusing in the class with eight cameras peering through the windows and I’m sure it would be hard on her classmates as well. It’s sad that someone would have to go to such measures just to do a thing as normal as going to school! I’ve now sadly crossed movie/rock star off my list of dream jobs. I guess I’ll go with business nerd who makes billions but nobody knows his name. Maybe that’ll keep the cameras away from me.

The title of the Michael Jackson documentary got me thinking. This Is It is a documentary about the “King of Pop”s rise back to the top of the entertainment world with his big new tour of sold out shows in London. Sadly it has been cancelled and if you don’t know why, you must not be using this internet thingy very well because the news of Michael Jackson’s untimely death is everywhere. Be it an accidental drug over dose or a murder, it doesn’t change the fact that a very influential entertainer and musician from our era is gone. As all of the news from this story was unraveling I noticed a couple things. One was the release of what seemed like several new albums on iTunes of Michael Jackson’s work. One such album was called Michael Jackson: The Stripped Mixes released July 7th, 2009 and here is a user comment about the album: “The timing of this release– On the day of Michael Jackson’s memorial service– is nothing but shameless naked greed. I might have purchased this in a week or two— but not now, not never”. I have to agree somewhat with this users comment; the first thing I thought about when I saw this album was released was wow that wasn’t fast. It’s tough to see this but from a business perspective, I’m sure nobody was buying more Michael Jackson’s than they were after his death since the initial releases of Bad, Thriller, and the like. So even though this movie was in the making before his death, the title makes me ask, Is this really it?

I couldn’t help but noticed as I walked to class this morning that people seemed to be in a cranky mood. Not everyone, but a large portion of the people on the streets, in the classrooms, and about the streets seemed to be put off. Now granted I usually walk to class with my head plugged into my ipod tunes but thats doesn’t mean I can’t see crankiness. For example, my hands were full and I didn’t hold a door for someone and in return got a dirty look. I similar situation happened while waiting for the elevator and I really tried not to let it bother me. At this point, I had my epiphany. Well for starters the weather wasn’t optimal to say the least. It was rainy, cold, and windy, and I don’t think many people care for such weather. But I think what really put a lot of people over the edge, was the packers loss to the vikings. Being a Minnesotan born n’ bred, I have to believe this! Especially since I attend to a public university in Wisconsin. And for the love of christ these people wont shut up about their Green Bay Packers and their Milwaukee Brewers. I am an avid sports fan but have never had a strong tie to any of the professional teams in Minnesota, and maybe thats why I kind of forgot how hard some of these people take a sports loss. Now I’m sure these people giving me dirty looks for not holding a door open have much bigger problems, as do I, but its always entertaining to push some people’s most easily agitated buttons. So even though I may not care too often if the professional teams in Minnesota win or lose, when it comes to playing teams from Wisconsin, we better god damn win.
